Lavrov: The US is taking advantage of the poor relations between Russia and the EU to export its own gas to Europe

The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, said that the United States is taking advantage of the deterioration of relations between the European Union and Russia in order to impose its liquefied gas on Europe. The full text of the statement can be found on the Ministry website.

According to Lavrov, the European Union is driven by the desire to politicize the problems related to the delivery of Russian gas to Europe. It disregarded economic realities and its financial interest and sought other suppliers at its own expense.

“In parallel, the United States is trying to use the current cooling of relations between us and the European Union to impose its liquefied natural gas, which requires very expensive infrastructure, on Europeans. If Europeans build such expensive infrastructure, it will be hard to get rid of it,” Lavrov said. U.S. companies began to supply liquefied natural gas to Asian, EU and South American countries in early May 2016.
