Iran is developing analogue to Russian S-300 air defense system
The Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, built in Iran, is superior to the original in its specifications and performance as was stated by the commander of Iran's Air Defense Forces, Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili, Tasnim News Agency reports.
According to him, the Bavar-373 missile system, which is a version of the S-300, can destroy targets at a distance that is 1.5 times greater than the S-300, which can locate a target at a distance of 300 km and knock it down at a distance of 200 km.
The Bavar-373 is equipped with three different rockets to engage different targets. Iran officially presented the system in August.
Earlier, Iranian authorities stated that the contract with Russia for the S-300’s was nearing completion, and the systems themselves would be deployed to ensure the security of nuclear facilities. It was reported that the last of the anti-aircraft missile systems were in process of being loaded and delivered from Russia. They were expected to arrive in the country in September or October. The Iranian military has already received instructions and training on use and maintenance of the S-300.
The contract for the S-300P air defense missile system between Iran and the Russian Federation took effect in the autumn of 2015. In March, the head of the Rostec State Corporation, Sergey Chemezov, said that the Iranians requested a version of the S-300PMU-1 to be delivered.
