In Russia, residents of Taymyr demand autonomy
For the third time, a group of residents on the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia have submitted documents to the country’s election commission, demanding a referendum on the return to the status of an autonomous region, said Stella Koch, a member of the group, according to Radio Liberty.
According to her, at the same time, representatives of the Evenkiysky District sent a request to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation with a request to assess the Federal Constitutional Law on the Association of Regions, on the basis of which Evenkiysky District and Taymyr were annexed to the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
Previous appeals by the group on Taymyr did not yield any results.
In the mid-2000s, Taymyr and Evenkia were joined to the Krasnoyarsk Territory as municipal districts and lost the status of autonomous regions, which significantly complicated the lives of the residents.
There are almost no state institutions left in these areas, and in order to get a certificate or a document, including a passport, residents of Taymyr have to travel hundreds of kilometers to Norilsk. The people of Evenkia are in a similar situation. Residents of the districts began to demand to return to the status of autonomous districts within two years after joining the region, but without success.
