Head of the Ukrainian cyber police anticipates new hacker attack on Independence Day
The next hacker attack in Ukraine is expected to be on Independence Day, says Sergey Demedyuk, head of the National Council Department on Cyber Policy.
"We warn that it will be on August 24, on Independence Day. We see that such attacks occur on the eve or day of some large holidays for Ukraine," he said in an interview with Glavkom.
He noted that there are many elements in M.E.Doc malicious software that are not yet activated.
"We do not yet know the full extent of the properties of the virus. We have only about 1,300 official applications where criminal proceedings have been started, and we must bear in mind that if criminals destroyed such an important channel for obtaining information, they left reserves. Very powerful reserves. We are currently trying to find another channel," said the head of the cyber policy department.
“Now we are trying to find another channel. I want to hope that Petya.A hit the channel and burned their network accidentally, but it's not true. Because we clearly know, the main goal of cybercriminals is to destroy traces of interference in vulnerable critical facilities.”
On June 27, as a result of a hacker attack using the Petya.A virus in Ukraine, up to 10% of private, governmental and corporate computers were disabled.
The hacker attack that utilized the Petya.A virus began in Ukraine during an update to the M.E.Doc program, which was released at 10:30 am on June 27.
