Georgian president asks Lithuania for support at NATO summit
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili asked Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė for support in bringing up matters important to Tbilisi at the NATO summit which will take place this week in Brussels, Delfi reported.
The two national leaders discussed the matter over the telephone.
“The conversation took place ahead of the NATO summit which will take place in Brussels on May 25. President G. Margvelashvili asked the Lithuanian president for support in bringing up matters important to Georgia at the upcoming meeting,” the Georgian president’s press service report states.
According to Lithuanian leader Dalia Grybauskaitė, it is very important for NATO to maintain a policy of open doors, and for Georgia and Ukraine, who are seeking membership in this organization, not to be forgotten by the international community.
As the president observed, having encountered the direct military aggression of Russia, Georgia is striving by all means to create a safe future, to protect and preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In 2008 at the summit in Bucharest, NATO announced that Georgia would become a member of the alliance, although the possibility of this in the near future looks hazy.
