Five new Russian divisions were created as a 'response to NATO'
Russia has formed four mechanized infantry divisions and one armored division, as stated by Vladimir Shamanov, head of the State Duma Defense Committee, at a meeting with military attaches from other countries, Interfax reported.
“In order to maintain combat capability, four mechanized infantry divisions and one armored division have been formed. This is a direct response to the challenges and threats posed by NATO’s actions to increase its presence along the eastern flank,” said Shamanov.
According to him, the development of non-nuclear forces in the Russian Federation is a main deterrent to the use of nuclear weapons and will ensure Russia’s ability in this area until 2021.
“This will, in the future, provide progressive development of a nuclear deterrent by non-nuclear means. It will be achieved primarily with the use of high-precision weapons. Improving strategic non-nuclear combat capability fourfold by 2021 will make it possible to completely solve the problem of nuclear deterrence,” Shamanov said.
He also noted that general forces play an important role in ensuring the security of the country. According to him, these are the primary forces that limit and prevent armed conflicts and international terrorism.
As noted earlier, NATO has moved to increase its presence on the Black Sea. Russian asserts that its actions are not an act of provocation, but simply a response to new challenges.
