Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria: The new Austrian government will follow the EU's policy of sanctions against Russia

The future head of the Austrian government, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Kurtz, promised to adhere to the current policy regarding EU sanctions against Russia, as stated during a speech in Vienna on Saturday, December 16th, DW reports.

At the same time, his partner in the coalition, chairman of the right-wing populist Freedom Party of Austria, Heinz-Christian Strache, said that he would personally prefer that sanctions against Russia be canceled, but if the majority in the EU does not want it, then they should follow the majority.

Kurtz and Strache also assured that the new government will not hold a referendum on the possible withdrawal of the country from the EU, the so-called Öxit.

"We will remain in the EU, but this does not mean that we cannot criticize the EU," Strache, who will become Vice-Chancellor in the new government, said.

The Austrian People's Party, headed by Sebastian Kurz, and the Freedom Party announced the formation of a coalition government.
