    On Monday, August 14th, a third coal carrier from South Africa arrived at the port of Yuzhne in Ukraine, as reported by the press service of DTEK Energo, which is purchasing the coal.

  • Ukraine signs first contract to import coal from US

    On July 31, the state power generation company Centerenergo announced that it had made a contract to import American coal from the company Xcoal Energy and Resources.

    As reported on Centrenergo’s website, the contract was signed as early as July 14, in keeping with the agreements between the presidents of Ukraine and the US which were achieved during Petro Poroshenko’s visit to the US.

  • Ukraine receives another shipment of South African coal

    On Sunday, July 23, the bulk carrier Zhao Yaung Feng arrived at the port of Yuzhniy with 75,000 tons of anthracite coal, the second batch ordered by the Donbas Fuel and Energy Company’s (DTEK) holding in South Africa, reported the press service of DTEK Energo.

    The coal is intended for Pridneprovska and Krivyy Rig Thermal Power Plant (TPP), which now operate one unit each. As of July 23, the stations hold anthracite reserves of 110,000 and 90,000 tons respectively.

    The coal mined in along the demarcation line in eastern Ukraine can be delivered to Turkey through Russia, as announced by the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, Igor Nasalik.

    In the South African port of Richards Bay, a second delivery of 75,000 tons of anthracite began loading on a cargo vessel. This coal is intended to replenish the warehouses of the thermal power plants of DTEK holding that belongs to businessman Rinat Akhmetov.     In 2016, roughly 1.04 million tons of coal was exported from the Donbas territories which are not controlled by Ukraine into Russia, LIGA.net reports, citing Russian railway data. In 2015, the volume of smuggled exports was somewhat larger – 1.3 million tons.

  • Russia has become Ukraine’s main coal supplier

    In the first quarter of 2017, coal imports from Russia to Ukraine amounted to 221,000 tons with a total import volume of 413,000 tons. A source in the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry shared this information with Interfax-Ukraine.

    According to its data, for the first quarter, Ukrainian power plants received 72,900 tons of coal from South Africa, 221,600 tons from Russia and 118,900 tons from Poland.
