Ukraine and Russia have terminated 44 treaties since 2014

Since the beginning of 2014, Ukraine and Russia suspended and terminated 44 treaties between the two countries, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine for European integration Olena Zerkal stated. She recalled that prior to 2014, both nations had concluded 451 international treaties.

“After the beginning of the armed aggression, we started inventory of a legal framework of bilateral relations with Russia. As of April 2018, according to our data, all necessary internal procedures have been carried out and the decision has been made to suspend or terminate 21 intergovernmental treaties initiated by Ukraine, 5 intergovernmental treaties initiated by Russia, and 18 inter-agency agreements,” Interfax-Ukraine quotes the Minister as saying.

Zerkal also noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine no longer considers appropriate the continuity of the treaty of amity, partnership and cooperation with Russia.

“We do not advocate the breach of that treaty; we advocate that this treaty is not extended for the next ten years because circumstances of the relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation have changed. These circumstances require new approaches to treaty framework,” the Deputy Minister added.

In March, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine prepared a proposal to denounce the Treaty of Amity with the Russian Federation. The treaty was signed in 1997 to run for a period of five years. It will be automatically extended until one of the parties wishes to terminate or suspend it.
