Poroshenko: Ukraine will buy more than 700 thousand tons of coal from American companies

Ukraine has signed a contract with American coal companies to supply more than 700,000 tons of anthracite coal to replace Russian supplies, President Petro Poroshenko said during his annual address to Parliament.

According to Poroshenko, the first batch of anthracite should be expected in the coming days.

"The first batch of the American anthracite, which will replace the Russian, is already expected in a few day. More than 700,000 tons have been additionally contracted from the USA," Poroshenko said.

In July, it was reported that the Ukrainian side were holding discussions regarding the supply of anthracite coal with the largest coal mining company in America - XCOAL Energy & Resources. This company mines in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and sells coal of varying hardness and anthracite, though mostly to metallurgical companies.

On August 22, it was reported that the US company XCOAL Energy & Resources had sent the first shipment of anthracite coal (85,000 tons) to Ukraine as part of a contract with Ukraine's state-owned Centrenergo.
