Ukrainian President announces tests of modernized T-72 tank

The firing tests of the modernized Т-72АМТ tank that was modernized at the Kyiv Armor Plant started in Ukraine, announced Ukrainian President Poroshenko on his Facebook page. According to the Ukrainian President, during the tests, the tank crews tested all shooting modes using all types of ammunition, including Kombat precision guided missiles.

“The power of the Kombat is enough to destroy even the most protected enemy tanks,” Poroshenko wrote. According to him, due to the use of high-precision weapons, the T-72AMT will be able to destroy enemy armored vehicles at a distance of up to 5 km.

Moreover, according to Poroshenko, the new tank received night-vision equipment with modern third-generation electronic-optical converters for all crew members and a night sight for firing high-precision missiles.

The Ukrainian President also posted test videos of the modernized Т-72. “We continue strengthening the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian army!” Poroshenko said.

The Т-72 was put into service in the Soviet Army in 1973. It was developed and manufactured in Nizhny Tagil at the Uralvagonzavod machine building company. In 1979, enhanced armor was added to the turret and it continued to be manufactured until 1985.

Poroshenko announced a new modification of the Т-72А in August last year. The Ukrainian President stated then that the modernized tank became “even more protected and effective” and that the Kyiv plant “took into account the maximum experience possible of Ukrainian military in the Donbas.”
