Ukrainian MFA: Russia attacked Ukraine because it was not punished for invasion of Georgia in 2008

Upon the commemoration of the eighth anniversary of Russian aggression in Georgia, the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that Ukraine was targeted by Russia because it has not received a firm and clear response from the international community following its aggression against Georgia. The lack of response led to the Russian occupation of a significant part of the sovereign country’s territory.

“Not having received a firm and clear response from the international community following the  aggression against Georgia, Ukraine has become Russia’s next target,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

“The occupation of the Georgian regions, Crimea and Sevastopol, and the continuing aggression of the Russian Federation in the Donbas indicates that Russia continues to blatantly violate the UN Statute, international law and its international obligations, and represents a threat to peace and security throughout the Euro-Atlantic area,” the Ministry believes.

“Ukraine confirms its respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders and calls on the international community to consolidate efforts and increase the pressure on Russia to complete cessation of aggression against neighboring states,” the statement says.
