Ukraine is preparing to submit a new lawsuit against Russia with the European Court of Human Rights

The Ukrainian Ministry of Justice is preparing to submit a lawsuit to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against Russia for banning the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People. According to Interfax-Ukraine, this was said by the Ukrainian Minister of Justice, Pavlo Petrenko, at a press conference in Kiev.

Based on the events surrounding the Mejlis, we have prepared a draft interstate titled ‘Ukraine against Russia’. It details the unlawfulness of the Mejlis’ prohibition by Russian authorities. We are now discussing this with our colleagues and lawyers who are cooperating with the Mejlis. This will be the fifth application and the fifth interstate case in the ECHR,” Petrenko said.

Petrenko requested that the head of the Mejlis, Refat Chubarov, provide an updated list of all the parties involved in the banning of the organization. “The Ministry of Justice will initiate the inclusion of these individuals onto the Ukrainian sanctions list, and will also propose that the Cabinet of Ministers include them onto an international sanctions list,” he said.
