Ukraine bans showing Russian films released after January 1st, 2014

The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that forbids showing any Russian films released after 1 January 2014 without exception.

Amendments to "The Motion Picture Law" were adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on Wednesday, March 29th. The text of the amendments was published on the Ukrainian Parliament website. 237 Parliamentarians voted in favor of these amendments. The law prohibits the showing of films produced after 1 August 1991, in which positive images of an aggressor nation, its officials or its actions are depicted. The ban covers all Russian films, without exception, produced and distributed after 1 January 2014.

The explanatory note to the draft law says that the purpose of the Amendment is the "improvement of a legal mechanism for the protection of the National Security of Ukraine in the sphere of information by restricting of all forms of propaganda used by the aggressor country."
