State Department has not confirmed appointment of Yovanovitch as new Ambassador to Ukraine

The US State Department has declined to comment on the possible appointment of Marie Yovanovitch as the new Ambassador to Ukraine. The media had previously reported that Washington intends to transfer the current ambassador, Geoffrey Pyatt, to Greece.

Ukrinform reported that the Director of the Press Office for the Department of State, Elizabeth Trudeau, refrained from commenting during a briefing in Washington on the 9th of May.

“I have no announcements on any appointments,” Trudeau said.

On the 7th of May, Ukrainian media reported that the US Embassy in Kiev may be headed by the current Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Marie Yovanovitch.

On the 6th of May, the Greek newspaper, Kathimerini, reported that the current US Ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, may soon leave his position in Kiev. He will instead become the US Ambassador to Greece.

“Washington has already sent the relevant documents to the Greek government and is waiting for approval from officials in Athens,” the newspaper said.
