Russian Defense Minister: In the future, precision nuclear weapons will be a major force of Russian army
The Defense Minister of the Russian Federation, General Sergey Shoygu, stated during a lecture for the executive personnel of the Defense Department that in four years, the foundation of Russian precision weaponry will be ships equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles as reported by Russia's Izvestia newspaper.
Shoygu indicated that the modern all-purpose surface ships and submarines equipped with these complexes will become part of the naval forces. He also noted that at the same time, the modernization of ships and submarines already in operational service of the fleet will occur.
According to the head of the Russian military institution, in the future such precision weapons like the Kalibr will replace nuclear armament as the basis of strategic deterrents.
Shoygu is convinced that this transition will help strengthen confidence-building measures and will lead to a reduction in tensions across the world.
“By 2021, the fighting capabilities of national, strategic, non-nuclear forces are planned to be increased by more than four times to allow us to fully address the challenge of non-nuclear deterrents,” the Defense Minister stated.
