Russian soldier killed in Syria

A Russian Marine from the Kaliningrad region, Andrey Timoshenkov, has been killed in action in Syria, bringing the official number of Russian soldiers killed in Syria to eleven, Korrespondent.net reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry made the announcement on Sunday, though the soldier was killed on Thursday.

According to authorities, the sergeant was killed by a suicide car bomb. Timoshenkov reportedly opened fire on the car as it tried to reach a humanitarian aid distribution point. The Russian Marine suffered several injuries from the explosion. Doctors at Russia’s Khmeimim airbase in Latakia spent more than a day attempting to save the soldier, but were unsuccessful.

“Sergeant Andrey Timoshenkov, who was escorting a humanitarian convoy of the Russian Reconciliation Center, has stopped a car rigged with explosives by opening fire at it using small arms. Andrey received fatal injuries in the explosion of the vehicle driven by a suicide bomber,” the Ministry stated.

The Defense Ministry stated that Timoshenko will receive a state award posthumously.
