Russian Ministry of Finance will continue negotiations with the IMF on Ukrainian debt

The Russian Minister of Finance, Anton Siluanov, stated that Russia will continue negotiations with the International Monetary Fund concerning the non-payment of $3 billion, which the former President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich, took on credit, TASS reported.

“We have been discussing the cooperation of the International Monetary Fund in an effort to secure its obligations on behalf of Ukraine and the consequences of the default that Ukraine allowed to happen with this debt,” Siluanov said.

However, Russia and Ukraine haven’t held a bilateral meeting during the spring session of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington that occurred from the 15th to 17th of April. The Russian Minister stated that the Ukrainian delegation, which arrived at the Summit, isn’t legitimate due to recent changes in the country’s government.

According to Siluanov, all contacts with the Ukrainian representatives still show the absence of a constructive negotiation process on the issue of the settlement of Ukraine’s debt to Russia.

Ukraine received $3 billion from Russia in December 2013, two months prior to the escape of the former President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich. The funds were transferred in exchange for sovereign Eurobonds by Kiev. After the change in government, Ukraine stated that it refused to return the debt of Viktor Yanukovich. The deadline for the repayment of this sum was December 2015.
