Russian government admits that foreign software in the country can be replaced only when domestic alternatives are available

Commenting on media reports about the alleged replacement of foreign software with domestic counterparts, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said, “We can talk about a total replacement of software, in particular, Microsoft, in Russian state structures only after domestic analogues of comparable efficiency are developed."

“It’s impossible,” he said when replying to the question about whether a total replacement of foreign software is happening. “It is possible if domestic software producers create something more effective. It’s a matter of efficiency,” Peskov explained.

The press secretary said that “in general, the process of producing domestic software is in progress. But there is an understanding that involving domestic software is possible where productivity and efficiency are not decreasing, and where it is adequately advanced and comparable to foreign analogues,” Peskov said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the TV company NBC, with reference to a US intelligence source, reported that the idea of replacing software developed by the American company Microsoft and other Western developers is allegedly being implemented in all Russian state agencies and corporations.

“We do not cooperate with any governments on espionage and will never do this. We give the possibility to governments to ensure the security of our products. We have done work to strengthen the protection of the private data of our users, including through legal proceedings. We have sued the American government four times,” Microsoft commented on the situation for TASS.

The company stressed that Microsoft has been in Russia for a long time. “Our course remains the same, and we will continue to contribute to the economic development of the country, the foundation of which is technology. We are also committed to the development of our own business in Russia,” Microsoft stated.
