Russia labels International Republic Institute and Media Development Investment Fund as 'undesirable' NGOs
The General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation has adopted a decision to recognize the activities of two foreign non-governmental organizations as undesirable in the country. This was reported by the agency’s press service.
“Based on the results of studying the received materials, the General Prosecutor’s Office has adopted a decision on the recognition of the activities of the foreign non-governmental organizations of the International Republican Institute and the Media Development Investment Fund,” the statement said.
US Senator John McCain is the Chair of the International Republican Institute.
According to the agency, their work poses a threat to the basic principles of the constitutional order of the Russian Federation, and to state security. The information on the adopted decisions was sent to the Ministry of Justice of Russia in order to add it to the list of foreign and international non-governmental organizations whose activities are recognized as undesirable in Russia. The list already contains seven organizations.
The Ministry of Justice of Russia had previously prepared a draft of federal law prohibiting the creation of legal entities by foreign and non-governmental organizations whose activities are recognized as undesirable in Russia.
The draft law allows for these organizations to be banned.
