Russia files new lawsuit against Ukrainian military leaders

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that it has initiated two new criminal proceedings regarding military actions in the Donbas. The first case concerns genocide of the national group of Russian-speaking people from January to August 2016, the website of the Russian Investigative Committee said.

The high military leadership of Ukraine, including the Minister of Defense, Stepan Poltorak, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Muzhenko, are suspects in the case. Russia accuses them of the death of 9 people and injury of 110 more.

The second case concerns the shelling of the Yelenovka checkpoint in April 2016. The commander of the 14th Brigade, Alexander Zhakun, is a suspect in this case. Zhakun is accused of using prohibited means and methods of warfare, resulting in the death of four people and injury of seven more.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, 53 criminal cases on separate events were attached to the general criminal case against Ukrainian security agencies. In 2015, the Investigative Committee reported the extension of its jurisdiction over Ukraine.
