Ukrainian MPs propose the restoration of Ukraine’s nuclear status

Members of the Radical Party of Ukraine, along with the head of its parliamentary faction, Oleh Lyashko, presented to the Verkhovna Rada a draft bill on the restoration of Ukraine's status as a nuclear power.

The bill provides for the abolition of the law "On the accession of Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on July 1st, 1968", as well as the resumption of the country's right to nuclear weapons. The text of the document has not yet been published.

In 1994, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a law "On the accession of Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on July 1st, 1968" with a number of reservations.

In December 1994, the Budapest Memorandum was signed. It constitutes an international agreement between Ukraine, the USA, Russia and the United Kingdom on security assurances in connection with Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
