Estonian Foreign Minister: The Russian government understands that it is pointless to attack us

Estonia has always supported establishing a relationship with Russia, stated Jürgen Ligi, the minister of foreign affairs of the Baltic Republic, in an interview with the TC channel RTV.

According to Ligi, Estonia hardly needs to fear attacks from Russia because Russian authorities realize the pointlessness of such a move.

“We have already done much for it. We have already brought defense spending to such a level where [we have a strong] collective defense. Both Vladimir Putin and Russia are well aware of that. I don’t think Putin has such a plan. Even if he wanted to attack us, he knows that it’s meaningless. But, I guess, after all he doesn’t want it. In our modern world, aggression doesn’t work,” the minister stated.

According to Ligi, he is ready to talk with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in order to build a relationship.

“At the highest level our relationships are frozen due to the sanctions. That’s why we have a pretty small field for dialogue. However, there is no desire for dialogue from Russia. Perhaps we are too small and insignificant, and Russia has enough partners to talk with without noticing us, but regardless, we should take Russia seriously as our neighbor,” the minister noted.

He added that it’s necessary to maintain a relationship with Russia that is as strong as possible.
