Bulgarian President: Russia is trying to destroy the foundations of the EU

Russia is trying to destroy the foundations of the European Union, as stated by the President of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev, on Wednesday, June 8th speaking in the European Parliament, EurActiv reports.

According to him, the crisis in Ukraine shows that Russia "does not support the principles of international order. The Kremlin is trying to destabilize the situation in the EU. He tries to destroy and bring down the foundations of the European Union, such as unity, solidarity and the rule of law," the President of Bulgaria said.

Plevneliev said that he hopes that there will not be a new cold war, but Russia's actions in Ukraine have led to the "cold world" where nobody wants a war, but where there's still conflict and confrontation.

He also stressed that it is impossible to accept the intervention of Russia in Ukraine as fact. "If the West allows this, it will be a historic shame," Plevneliev said. "For me, for us, the Crimea is Ukraine and Ukraine is Europe!" he stressed.

Earlier it was reported that the President of Bulgaria supports the extension of sanctions against Russia.
