Aivaras Abromavičius met with Saakashvili before his Resignation

The Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, Aivaras Abromavičius, who recently resigned from his position, explained the reason for his meeting with the Governor of Odessa Oblast, Mikheil Saakashvili, on the eve of his resignation.

“I appointed Saakashvili as the Chairperson of the Council on State-Owned Business Reforms before he was appointed as the Governor of Odessa-Oblast.  That is why I have a close relationship with him and we fight together against corruption in State-owned businesses. Many people knew about my resignation a day prior to the announcement. Several people called me and asked for a meeting to discuss my plans without going into the details of my resignation. That is why I met with ambassadors, business associates and Saakashvili. As a result, I received universal support and understanding concerning my decision,” he said.

Abromavičius also noted that he currently has no political plans. “It was only within the last year that I have been involved in politics. I have been doing business for 19 years before my political career. I think I will continue to make progress in that area,” he said.

As Apostrophe reported, Presidential Adviser Oleg Medvedev called Mikheil Saakashvili, Oleh Lyashko (the leader of the Radical Party), and Serhiy Leshchenko (the People’s Deputy of Ukraine) "clowns" in connection with the resignation of Abromavičius.
