Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said that the modernization of the MiG-31 fighter was in parallel with the development of the hypersonic Kinzhal anti-ship missile.
“The supersonic MiG-31 was selected as a carrier for the Kinzhal. The work on the modernization of this unique supersonic aircraft, which is ahead of its time, was in parallel with the development of the weapons themselves,” he wrote on Twitter.
The day before, on March 10, the Defense Ministry reported on the successful training and combat launch of the Kinzhal missile complex, which President Vladimir Putin spoke about to the Federal Assembly. The tests confirmed the tactical and technical characteristics of the Kinzhal, the department said. The ministry also noted that since the beginning of 2018, crews of the aircraft have carried out more than 250 flights with the missile system.
