Media: Ukrainian authorities arrest owner of 'private border' with Hungary

On the morning of November 16 at the Karpata resort near Mukachevo, law enforcement officers arrested Horvat Attila, alias “Doki”, who is the owner of the so-called “private border” with Hungary that is used for smuggling, reported Mukachevo.net with reference to sources in Ukrainian law enforcement.

The article also reported the arrest of the chief of the regional StateGeoCadastre (the State Service of Ukraine for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre) department.

UNN, citing Oleh Senyuk, military prosecutor of the western region, reported large-scale searches for the people who had captured the land on the border strip in the Zakarpattia province.

“The military prosecutor general’s office of the western region and the State Border Guard Service are currently undertaking more than 100 searches as part of a criminal investigation, in order to document the unlawful activity of an organized group which is related to the illegal expropriation of border lands, and which also organizes the unlawful circulation of especially dangerous narcotics both in Ukrainian territory and beyond it, using these pieces of land, which were brought closer to the border,” Senyuk explained.

According to Senyuk, the investigation involves more than 300 PGO investigative staff, rapid response divisions, and 70 units of automotive and special equipment.

“The investigations are still underway. There are already certain results: significant quantities of particularly dangerous narcotics have been confiscated from one of the individuals” the prosecutor explained.

He added that searches were also taking place in private houses and on the premises of businesses which may be involved in the seizure of these plots of land, and the preparation and distribution of narcotics.

In the middle of October, Chief Military Prosecutor Anatolii Matios reported the existence of a “private” border with Hungary. The land had been allocated to local residents, but later the plots were acquired by a select few.
