US Envoy for International Energy Affairs: we support those who oppose Nord Stream 2

Sue Saarnio, Acting Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, spoke about this in an interview with BBC Ukraine during her visit to Ukraine.

"We are on the side of those countries that oppose Nord Stream 2. We believe that it does not contribute to the diversification of energy supplies nor the diversification of routes.”

“We believe that it is dangerous for Europe to depend on almost 75% of supplies from one source," she said.

Saarnio also said that the US understands that Germany supports this project.

"But I want to talk with representatives of various parties, [and] find out their position. Some players have a very clear position, but for them there are certain risks.”

In addition, I want to talk with representatives of the US military command in Europe and to hear their thoughts, because this is a matter of national security," she noted.

It was reported earlier that the authorities of the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have approved the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
