Ukrainian Minister of Justice: Kyiv guarantees Yanukovych’s safety if he returns to Ukraine

The former Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych, does not have to worry for his life and can return to Ukraine to take part in the lawsuit against him, said the Minister of Justice, Pavlo Petrenko, during an interview with Delovaya Stolitsa.

"Yanukovych has the opportunity to return to Ukraine and independently submit his position in court and the state will guarantee his security," Petrenko assured.

In addition, the Minister is certain that the lawsuit against Yanukovych has no political elements, and “the fugitive President is trying to add politics into this process."

"We see not a politicized, but an exclusively legal, public process, in which there is a prosecution party hiding in another country. At the same time, he is given the opportunity (through defenders) to defend his position," Petrenko asserts.

In his opinion, the legal processes in Yanukovych’s case are progressing in accordance with European standards of justice.

At the same time, the Minister notes that the former President has had every opportunity to defend his position in court. "Everything depends on the evidence provided by the defense ... Ukraine is not Russia and it is not a dictatorial state. The court will rule on the basis of the evidence provided by the prosecutor's office and the arguments that will be presented by the defense."

At the same time, Petrenko is sure that "if there is a conviction, it will be legally enforced," and Yanukovych "sooner or later will be detained and transferred to the Ukrainian justice system."
The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has already informed the former president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, that he is accused of seizing power.
