Ukraine supports Security Council resolution on Jerusalem

Ukraine’s permanent ambassador to the UN Volodymyr Yelchenko reported that Ukraine supported the UN Security Council’s draft resolution on the status of Jerusalem, and advocated the necessity of observing the norms of international law, Ukrinform writes.

“The ultimate status of Jerusalem must be determined exclusively through negotiations in accordance with the Security Council’s resolutions… Ukraine consistently advocates the necessity of observing the norms of international law. For us this is particularly important in the context of opposing Russia’s aggression, which defiantly disregards the principles of the UN Charter,” he said.

Yelchenko noted that Ukraine also supported the draft resolution because the document rejects the forceful seizure of territory.

“This provision has key significance for Ukraine in the context of Russia’s temporary occupation of Crimea and the separate regions of the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, and the de-escalation efforts,” the diplomat pointed out.

In addition, according to Yelchenko, Ukraine supports the principle of coexistence of both states – Israel and Palestine.

Earlier Egypt put forward a draft resolution for consideration by the Security Council condemning the US’s ruling on the unilaterally determined status of Jerusalem.

During the voting, the document was vetoed by the US delegation. US permanent ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called the voting on this resolution “an insult”.
