Tillerson: Russia is involved in several conflicts in former USSR

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson condemned Russia’s actions that block efforts to peacefully resolve conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the occupied regions of Georgia. This statement was made during a speech at the OSCE headquarters in Vienna.

We welcome the recent talks on the situation in Moldova in the 5 + 2 format. However, we must condemn Russia’s efforts aimed at blocking access to the regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the occupied regions of Georgia,” Tillerson said.

He also noted that Russia is playing role in a number of other conflicts in post-Soviet regions.

“We must make progress in ending the protracted conflicts in Georgia and Moldova, as well as in Nagorno-Karabakh. We support the efforts of the Minsk Group to find a solution,” said the head of U.S. foreign policy.

Tillerson spoke positively about the fact that the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan committed themselves to intensifying the talks and reducing tensions along the line of conflict.

“Substantial progress can be achieved when there is political will, and we welcome their decision yesterday to speed up events on both sides,” the U.S. Secretary of State noted.
