Russian Defense Ministry: Russia’s frigate Admiral Grigorovich is on its way to Syria

A frigate of the Black Sea Fleet of Russia, the Admiral Grigorovich, sailed from Sevastopol in the Russian-annexed Crimea on December 1, heading for the Mediterranean Sea to join a group of Russian Navy ships, said the press service of the Southern Military District of the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Today the frigate’s crew started to execute a planned transition from Sevastopol to the Mediterranean Sea. The frigate left the fleet’s main base immediately after an official ceremony dedicated to the start of the new educational year,” the ministry said.

The Ministry stated that on December 2, the frigate will join Russian flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea, which currently consists of approximately 15 warships from the Black Sea Fleet.

On November 5, the Ivan Golubets, a Russian Black Sea Fleet trawler, completed its sailing journey through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles joined Russian warships in the Mediterranean Sea.

Commander of the Russian Southern Military District Aleksandr Dvornikov said in his interview to the Krasnaya Zvezda, an official newspaper of the Russian Defense Ministry, that in 2017, the Russian Navy increased by one third the training drills of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla, including artillery firing and rocket launching practices.
