Russia conducts military exercises in Transdniestria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova expressed indignation at the Russian military conducting regular military exercises in the territory of Transdniestria, as stated in comments by the foreign ministry.

“According to information published on the website of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, an operational group of Russian troops stationed in the Transdniestrian region of Moldova is again conducting military exercises, the purpose of which is described as ‘combating terrorism and destroying a hypothetical enemy that is using weapons of mass destruction.’ The Foreign Ministry is perplexed and indignant because of the provocative actions of Russian troops illegally stationed in the region. The Moldovan authorities are also concerned because of the fact that the power structures of the unrecognized Transdniestria are taking part in these exercises,” the report said.

The statement emphasizes that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova categorically condemns such actions, which directly threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry is referencing Russia’s obligations to withdraw its troops and weapons from the country in accordance with the Agreement on Principles for the Peaceful Settlement of the Armed Conflict, signed in 1992, in the Dniester Region.

Earlier it was reported that the Moldovan authorities are going to hire an international law firm to assess the damage caused by the Russian forces occupying Transdniestria.
