Putin wants to bring scientists back to Russia

At a meeting with participants of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi, Vladimir Putin said that Russia is interested in those citizens “who were here and who can work here” returning to Russia, reported RBC news agency.

“Not all at the same time,” added the president. He added that, as far as citizens are concerned, “we are interested in all our citizens returning, but when speaking about science, those who can work toward scientific advancements.”

Putin’s comments were in response to a statement made by scientist Artem Oganov, who said that his dream is that scientists who are currently working abroad begin to return to Russia. Oganov himself lived abroad for several years but then went back to Russia.

“The West was good to me, but then I had the opportunity to work in Russia, and I started to do so for four months each year. And I liked it so much that I decided to live in my home country,” he said.

The president added that Russia would basically like all of its citizens who have moved abroad to return. Putin noted that Russia continues to give large grants to scientists, which guarantees funding for research for several years. Putin also added that another problem is providing education and future employment for young scientists.
