Ukrainian President thanks U.S. for the decision to provide lethal weapons

President Petro Poroshenko thanked the U.S. for its support of Ukraine in "the face of Russian aggression", reported the head of government’s press service.

“Last year, our American partners confirmed their leadership in opposing Russian revanchism. From the very first meeting with President Trump, we coordinated the strengthening of our strategic partnership on the basis of the great peace treaty and the great success plan,” said Poroshenko on Tuesday evening in Kyiv during a meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions of foreign countries and international organizations.

The head of state added that Ukrainians are grateful for the “peace through power” approach and, accordingly, for the decision to provide Ukraine with defensive lethal weapons, as well as for coordinated steps to implement the initiative to deploy the UN peacekeeping mission in the occupied Donbass.

According to him, Ukraine also greatly appreciates the firm position of the U.S. on transatlantic unity and solidarity with Ukraine, including the policy of sanctions.
“They have provided the most effective and civilized response to Russian aggression,” said Poroshenko.

U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch said that the U.S. government will provide Ukraine with weapons, including Javelin anti-tank missiles, at no cost.
