Turchynov: Ukrainian army is one of the strongest in Europe

During the celebrations of both Pokrov (the Protection of Our Most Holy Lady and Ever-Virgin Mary) religious holiday and Defender of Ukraine Day, which fell on the same day this year, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Olexandr Turchynov, stated that the Ukrainian army is now becoming one of the strongest in Europe.

Turchynov stated that the celebration of Defender Day occurring at the same time as Pokrov was symbolic.

"It is no coincidence, the Cossacks at Zaporozhian Sich believed the Blessed Virgin Mary to be their patron and protector. The combination of historical memory and spiritual traditions is a foundation on which we build our democratic European state," Secretary of the National Security Council said.

According to Turchynov in just two years, through joint efforts, it became possible to rebuild and equip the Ukrainian army.

"The success of our victories in the confrontation with a strong and cruel enemy is not only because of modern weapons and military professionalism, but above all, in the unity of our people," Secretary of the National Security Council said.

On October 15th Ukraine celebrated the  Defender of Ukraine Day.

During the Defender Day celebrations, there were about 4,000 law enforcement officers maintaining order in Kyiv.
