Pope Francis donates money to help victims of the war in eastern Ukraine

Pope Francis has donated €5 million from a personal fund, in the framework of charitable assistance, to victims of the conflict in the Donbas.

These funds will be added to the aid collected from all Roman Catholic churches of Europe and from the Greek-Catholic Church of Ukraine as per the initiative of the Pope, which was implemented on the 24th of April. This was reported by the Apostolic Nunciature, which is the Vatican Embassy in Ukraine.

The representatives of the Vatican and the ''Caritas International'' Catholic charity organization arrived in the country on the 1st and the 2nd of August to begin the “operating phase” of the “Pope for Ukraine” initiative. The secretary of the “Cor Unu” Pontifical Council, Giovanni Pietro Toso, was included in this group.

Representatives of the Holy See and the Apostolic Nuncio, which is the Ambassador of the Vatican to Ukraine, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, had already held a meeting with the technical committee in Zaporizhia. It was here that the “operational details” of the humanitarian project was discussed, the start date of which is scheduled for the 1st of September.
