NATO agrees to provide assistance to Finland in the event of a crisis in the Baltic

NATO will be able to provide assistance to Finland in the event of a crisis in the Baltic region. This was said by the Alliance’s Deputy Secretary-General, Alexander Vershbow.

“It is possible that a crisis in the Baltic Sea region could affect NATO members and Finland. NATO would then probably decide to respond to this by protecting member countries and by providing assistance to its close partners,” Lännen Media quoted Vershbow as saying.

Vershbow also spoke about the “very close ties” between NATO and Finland. However, he did not specify what kind of help the Alliance would provide to the country.

Finland is not a member of NATO, but it is developing partnership relations with the Alliance. In June, Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä said that applying for accession to NATO would require the broad support of the citizens. He also did not rule out that a referendum on this issue will be held in the future.
