Media: Missile warning system will be returned to the Crimea

Russia intends to restore the Dnepr radar station, which is situated near Sevastopol. This new facility will house a missile warning system which will be able to detect ballistic launches, cruise missile launches and hypersonic missile launches from the waters of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. This was reported by the Izvestia newspaper, citing a source in the military-industrial sector.

There are two ways to restore the station. The first option would be building it from the ground up with the aid of technology used in the new Voronezh-type EWS stations. Another way is to use equipment from the unfinished Dnepr station near Irkutsk. The Russian military has chosen the first option.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the station in Sevastopol was inherited by Ukraine. It was then leased to Russia. This lease agreement was then broken which resulted in the station being unused for more than 10 years.

It was previously reported that Russia had begun manufacturing individual elements of a military railway missile system near Barguzin.

On the 12th of May, the US military opened a ground-based missile defense system in Romania which was designed to intercept ballistic missiles.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that this Romanian base is not a defensive system but part of a US nuclear strategy.

Putin also said that Russia is now forced to think about a way to stop the threat to their national security, which is the deployment of NATO missile defense systems in Europe.
