Lithuanian Foreign Ministry: Russia is a ‘super problem,’ not a superpower

The minister of foreign affairs of Lithuania, Linas Linkevičius, stated during a meeting at the Warsaw Security Forum that the European Union and NATO should respond to the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation, reported a correspondent for Evropeyskaya Pravda.

“When we talk about troublesome countries, the first country that comes to mind isn’t ‘superpower Russia’ but ‘super problem Russia.’ Today, it is important to react in due time, but not wait until it is too late, which is what happens sometimes. It isn’t only about Lithuania; it is about all countries and world security as a whole. It concerns the values that we defend,” Linas Linkevičius said.

The minister stated that the European Union has its internal problems, such as immigration and the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, but there are also external threats such as hostilities in Syria and Ukraine.

“Many meetings, summits and handshakes took place, and in the meantime people are dying in Aleppo. We should think about the civilization of the twenty-first century. Why is this happening? Are we able to do anything or can we only condemn and say that we are deeply concerned?” the minister of foreign affairs of Lithuania said.

“We are talking about the situation in Aleppo, but a similar situation occurred in Ukraine. Somebody is trying to redraw the borders. Besides, it isn’t the first time. The same happened in Georgia in 2008,” Linkevičius added.
