Ambassador: Canada is not ready to provide Ukraine with lethal weapons yet

Canada is not ready to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine, but is still a key partner in the Defense arena, as stated by the Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, Roman Waschuk, in his interview with UNIAN.

"The supply of lethal weapons is not considered at the moment. We are in the process of making a political decision on the next phase of Canadian-Ukrainian military and technical cooperation, in particular, military exercises, so I am not going to offer any theories. However, I would say that I think we will continue to maintain close contact with the Armed Forces of Ukraine," he said.

According to Roman Waschuk, the recent appointment of a higher level official from the Canadian Defense Ministry to the advisory body of the Defense Minister of Ukraine shows that Ottawa is going to remain one of Kyiv’s key partners in the defense arena.

Earlier, the former U.S. Secretary of Defense, Ashton Carter, stated that in the future the U.S.A. will consider the issue of providing Ukraine with defensive lethal weapons. According to the him, this issue is being considered and the decision will depend on Russia’s implementation of the Minsk agreements.
