Estonian intelligence uncovers a network of Russian agents

The Director General of the Estonian Department of Foreign Intelligence, Mikk Marran reports that Russian agents have been discovered among public figures, journalists, diplomats, businessmen and politicians, according to Delfi.

“We have discovered a network comprised of Russian agents, who receive instructions of what to do. We can clearly see that these people are carrying out a Russian agenda,” reports Marran.

He has warned that despite the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the threat from Russia has not been alleviated. In his words, the Kremlin has recently begun increasing the use of agents and expanding their role.

Marran cites the example of politicians, who “for years have worked at the level of local government, but now have started joining parliaments and governmental bodies on the national level.”

“They [the Russians] offer these politicians media attention and political support, exclusive business opportunities and in certain circumstances even financial assistance,” notes Marran. He did not reveal the names of the suspects.

The Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs has previously advised the West to speak with Russia from a position of strength and unity. He emphasized that the Russian Federation is a country “that uses its army to achieve its political goals.”
